To follow up on my post a little while back here are Vancouver's final pre and post trade deadline records. Truly this was a crazy miscalculation by the management staff and heads will roll. An all-time trade deadline apocalypse and a brutal choke job by the players. Reminder, Vancouver didn't subtract anything it was using for this season at the deadline and added Gausman, Diaz, Belt, and Fairbanks. By Fangraphs that's a cumulative addition of 10 WAR based on their 2022 numbers.
Pre Deadline: 56-37 (.602 winning %, 98 win pace)
Post Deadline: 28-41 (.405 winning %, 66 win pace)
The Caps literally became as bad post deadline as they were good pre deadline. What a crazy season.
Agreed, I wonder about Hal's peverse sense of humor. Homestead waves the white flag and trades Max, Belt and Benitendi. Month of July 11-16, seems right. Rest of season Hom goes 26-13 with a 10+ game win streak. Usage and opponent did help, but I finished the season with 22 eligible player starting Kluber and Cole Irvin. I think the correct way to win in HALs eyes is to trade AWAY your parts not add them... I think the track record over the years is clear!
Sobering analysis. Any correlation to losing Trout (and others) due to usage? I’ve seen nosedives like this before, but this might be the biggest head-scratcher so far.
